Can You Play GTA VI on PS4 or Xbox One?
PS4 and Xbox One are absent from Rockstar’s announced GTA VI platform list. If either is your only console, use this checklist to decide what to buy without losing sight of the games you already own.
The listed console release is November 19, 2026. A later version for an older console should not be assumed. This guide is about the announced release, not a prediction about future ports or cloud streaming.
If you own a PS4
A PS5 is the simplest platform switch if your friends and purchased games are on PlayStation. Sony says PS5 plays the vast majority of PS4 games, but check the compatibility of the particular titles you care about. A PS4 disc needs a compatible PS5 with a disc drive; a PS5 Digital Edition cannot use those discs. Your digital PS4 purchases have a different ownership path, so review your account library before selling your PS4.
For GTA VI itself, Rockstar describes the physical Standard Edition as a box with a download code, not a game disc. Choose a disc-drive PS5 for your existing disc library, not because you expect a GTA VI disc in that box. A standard PS5 is on Rockstar’s supported list; a PS5 Pro is not required just to play.
If you own an Xbox One
Xbox Series X|S keeps you in the Xbox ecosystem. Microsoft says many Xbox One games are backward compatible, and describes your games, progress and friends carrying over to Series S. Check the specific games you use. Series S is all-digital and cannot play your Xbox One discs. Series X comes in disc-drive and all-digital models, so verify the exact listing if you own physical games.
Both Series X and Series S are in Rockstar’s GTA VI platform list. Microsoft’s general display targets are not confirmed GTA VI resolution or frame-rate modes. If Series S meets your budget and you buy your games digitally, you do not need Series X simply to be on a supported platform.
Three checks before you pay
1. Count the games you would keep playing. Separate discs from digital purchases. Check your most important games for compatibility and choose the console model that can use them.
2. Price the whole setup. Add the console, GTA VI, any storage or accessories you actually need, tax and delivery. Our budget calculator helps you compare the total without guessing a retailer price.
3. Choose your platform, then the model. Friends, existing purchases and your preferred controller matter over years of other games. Use the console picker to compare PS5, PS5 Pro, Series X and Series S based on your situation. Wait for game-specific performance tests if you are paying extra only for a rumored GTA VI mode.
